SUE Success Stories

This series of case studies highlights instances where the SUE consortia have successfully impacted upon the world beyond academia. These case studies show that their dissemination and engagement efforts are yielding significant benefits, both for the researchers and for sustainability practitioners, as well as promoting environmental sustainability throughout the UK and beyond. The Success Stories also provide useful knowledge transfer recommendations based on the lessons learnt from the SUE consortia.

Success Stories

AMELIA (part of AUNT SUE)

This report examines the impacts of the collaboration between the research team and Hertfordshire County Council. Successful collaboration with Hertfordshire County Council meant the AMELIA tool impacted on policy decisions in the area of accessibility as well as providing evidence of cost effective decision making.

HADRIAN (part of AUNT SUE)

This report studies the impacts of the collaboration between the HADRIAN research team and Transport for London. HADRIAN recommends ways in which journey planners could be adapted to reduce stress for disabled people travelling by public transport. These suggestions formed an inclusive or “I-Journey Planner” which was taken up by Transport for London.

DISTILLATE

This report examines how DISTILLATE's two pronged approach to knowledge exchange (engagement with local authorities and the UK transport industry) led to the research outputs becoming part of UK transport planners’ working practices.

Eastside Sustainability

This case study highlights the permanent impact a knowledge exchange partnership between the academic research team and redevelopment firm ISIS had on the working practices of the firm, its stakeholders, and in turn, the practitioner community.

IDCOP

This study is focused on the impact of one activity within the IDCOP project which has expanded beyond the project into the on-going development of the Sustainable Built Enviroment Tool (SuBET) tool. SuBET is a sustainable masterplanning tool which will be used to guide the future design of exemplar planning and development schemes.

SOLUTIONS

This investigation focuses on the impacts of the Freiburg study tours, conducted by WHO and Gabriel Scally, Regional Director of Public Health for SW England. The main impact of the tours was to create a shared vision and network of senior leadership who were connected with sustainable living in the South West of England.

Urban Futures

This report examines how Urban Futures' close involvement with steering group partners – specifically the Environment Agency and environmental consultants CH2M HILL – led to the uptake and adaptation of the project's outputs.

An investigation of the knowledge exchange practices of the end-users of sustainability research

An investigation of the knowledge exchange practices of the end-users of sustainability research. This report seeks to understand the knowledge landscape amongst end-users of urban sustainability research. 40 semi-structured interviews were conducted with urban sustainability practitioners and policy makers to inform the findings.

Understanding KT through Best Practice Maps

KT on the InSITU Project This report examines how dissemination was successfully conducted on the InSITU project, a SUE PLUS project. The report shows how stakeholders interacted through a map of communication links. The study produced lessons regarding KT which are applicable to other research projects in the Sustainable urban Environment.

REAP and City Car Club Case Studies This report investigates the KT lessons which can be drawn from successful engagement projects outside the SUE Programme. The study focuses on two case studies from the sustainable development field: REAP, a carbon footing tool developed by the Stockholm Environmental Institute – York and the establishment of the first city car club in the UK.

ISSUES Workshop for KT Scotland Conference 2010

‘Otherwise Engaged: Know Your KE Landscape’

ISSUES ran an interactive workshop in which delegates explored the ways in which they and others engage and communicate about their work. Putting together information gathered from the research generators (both within the SUE programme and outside) and research users (policy makers and practitioners) this session looked at overlaps, gaps, and the opportunities to improve research reach and impact.
