Bridging the Gap: understanding the barriers to exchange of knowledge in urban sustainability research and practice
Published in IEMA's Environmentalist (Oct 2010).
This paper presents initial findings from the ISSUES project, highlighting both barriers and best practice case studies within academic research consortia and sustainability practitioners. The case studies demonstrate a range of effective approaches used within sustainable urban research including social networks, informal linkages, personal contacts and the development of relationships between organisations. |

Knowledge exchange between academia and industry
Published in the Institution of Civil Engineer's Engineering Sustainability journal (Sep 2010).
There is little empirical evidence to show whether the involvement of practitioners in construction research is changing either research practices or the acquisition of new knowledge by practitioners. This paper provides some of this evidence, by summarising the results from four studies to investigate how knowledge is being created within the Sustainable Urban Environment research consortia and how it is being accessed by the construction industry.

This report seeks to understand the knowledge landscape amongst end-users of urban sustainability research. 40 semi-structured interviews were conducted with urban sustainability practitioners and policy makers to inform the findings. |
