Sustainable Urban Land use and Transport
The DISTILLATE consortium (led by the University of Leeds) has developed a knowledge base and associated tools to help practitioners achieve the development and delivery of sustainable urban transport and land use strategies which in turn help to bring about enhanced quality of life. Their products include the following:
DISTILLATE Decision Making Tool
The DISTILLATE Decision Making Tool is a knowledgebase designed to help policy makers, professionals and interest groups understand the challenges of sustainability in urban transport, and to help users identify the policies that will help to achieve sustainable urban transport policy objectives. It is available through the Local Transport Planners Network at http://www.ltpnetwork.gov.uk/ The tool is an effective options generator that directs users to practice and policy guidance appropriate to their needs. Associated with this are two guidebooks.
Decision-Makers' Guidebook
The Decision-Makers' Guidebook provides a logical structure for specifying objectives, indicators and targets, identifying possible solutions and strategies, assessing their impacts, and implementing them successfully.
Policy Guidebook
The Policy Guidebook provides more detail on the policy instruments outlined in the Decision-Makers' Guidebook. Each policy measure is described and assessed against a common set of objectives of urban transport policy. There are also case studies showing examples of good practice in the use of each policy measure. Where possible, an assessment is made of the contexts in which each policy measure performs best. Links are provided between the policy instruments so that opportunities can be identified for integrating them to achieve enhanced performance against the objectives.
